First I would like to thank all my friends, family and customers for helping Mark-et al. Computers grow each year since it started in 1992. I hope everyone has been satisfied with my work and I look forward to helping you in the future. I also appreciate those of you who have been flexible when time and family activities didn't allow for an immediate response. I have taken all of the e-mail addresses from my database of records to send this out. If addresses are incorrect or you wish further e-mails sent to another address please let me know. Also if you would like NOT to receive any further memos please also reply and let me know. Well it's the last month before the big Y2K date. As you are probably aware, I am not taking advantage of this date like many computer companies seem to be. We will of course find out on Jan 1 who was right (I hope it is me) but at least you can spend your money on facts not hype. I can tell you your engine may die on your car too but lets wait for it to happen and not just go out and buy a new car tomorrow. The 1st thing everyone should do THIS MONTH is update your software. I feel the best defense is to have the most current software running on your machine. I have 3 sights that you should check in this order. #1 www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com or on windows98 just use the Windows update button I believe you must use Internet Explorer to access this site and not Netscape This sight is run by Microsoft and will scan your system to see what FREE updates are available for you to download. IF the opening web page tells you to get Internet 5.....let me know, I have the CD and will save you several hours of downloads and installs. From the updates site click on the Product Updates button and wait while a program loads behind the scenes to check your system. It will seem like the system is stuck or not responding but just wait for an agreement page to show up and click accept. It will then load and scan your system giving you a list of updates to choose from. All updates are ok to get but there is no need to check any of the foreign language files. All updates will download and then install all by themselves......no hassles....not for even the novice It will take several times to this page to get all the updates available. Jus t do a several each day 'til all are complete. Continue to recheck the page to make sure no new updates pop up. #2 www.updates.com This site will check for other updates besides Microsoft and also give you a list to select from. These programs will download to your system and then have to be loaded 1 by 1 but it is well worth the time and trouble. #3 www.manageable.com same type of site as above but checks a different set of programs #4 Check with any software company who programs you use regularly. Key programs should include Financial programs such as Peachtree, Quicken, OWP, Schedulers and ToDo Programs, or other program that use dates to key events. Most vendors still have 1-800 numbers, web sites, or FREE updates. I hope this helps all of you and your friends, feel free to forward this if you feel it is helpful. If you need any help please feel free to contact me. The best way is by my pager 235-6485 and I will call you back as soon as possible. My next Letter will include special programs and tips, Such as FREE internet services, FREE E-Mail, and E-Mail tips. Mark Hayden Mark-et al. 317-892-4516 |
